Once a scarf.. now a head piece

Once again I found myself wanting to do something productive that does not fall under the category of homework. I tried to think of what to make, when I came across an old scarf that I bought my freshman year of college. I think I have worn this scarf maybe... twice. This once forgotten scraf has now been transformed into vintage ear warmers. Yes, this is true. I made ear warmers. Enjoy

Cup of Cheer

.a Cup of Cheer.

For Christmas this year... people get a touch of " the alexandra".
yep that's right, I making my presents...why? because I Can. Ashley Sham. I am so excited for you to open yours. This seems like something you would really enjoy! Ashley actually informed me of this farmers market that runs during the summer in Rexburg, Idaho. While wondering around she stumbled upon a cute little booth where hair pins where hand made and being sold. Because of this tid bit of information, I decided to improvise and see what I could come up with. These are they...

..Merry Chrisrtmas..

Accessorize

PUt It in My HaiR & I'll WeAR it.

I made a dress for my best friends wedding and there was an extra flower. So i made......

Earlier in the summer I was making head dresses for indian costumes. Around this time hair pieces were becoming popular and I hadn't found any that I liked. so my "i can make that" mentality kicked in. Once it was completed my Australian father commented and said that he thought it was ELEGANT. If the man says he likes it then.... i'll take his word for it. His sense of style is exquisite

WAIT... theres more

.......Creations....................................................................................................................................

So I have this knack for making things that I see in stores or in magazines. Why buy, when I can make? I am known for the phrase, "I can make that"...because I can. It seems like such a simple concept. Luckily, I stuck with learning basic sewing skills taught to me by my mother. All those hours having to unpick mistakes has paid off, now making it possible for my to make up my own techniques, trying out new things and inventing as I go. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but they get better with each attempt.

"Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties."

My friend Nicole bought me this fabric at a vintage store in California. She said when she saw it she thought, "Oh, Alex could do something with this." for two years this fabric sat and waited until i decided to make it into a sweater.
-inspiration: roommate She came home with a new sweater....naturally I said, "I can make that" and the vintage fabric from California was finally put to good use.

59 cents: YES PLEASE.....

I found this yellow fabric in the scrap section for 59 cents. I had to buy it. Later that night I found a plain shirt in my closet that I never wear and embellished it

I liked the YELLOW shirt so much i made another one...

The First... it began in High School silk screening. This is the first of many... I got the photo from a national geographic magazine and I scanned and manipulated the image into what i wanted. the END RESULT...

THE THINGS I SEE

People: I guess you can say I have seen a lot of things that are very different from the states. Each morning we drive through this place called Old Town, a place where there are tons of shops with tons of variety. You have the normal venders that have actual building where they have their goods for sale and then there are others that put up and take down their shops each morning and night. On this particular morning I just happened to see some things that will be with me forever. While we were at a stop light an old man crossed in front of our car. At first all you could see is the massive box that was strapped to his back. As he passed the front of the car and came into view and old crippled man was the individual carrying this box. He was hunched over and had rope wrapped around him and around this large wooden crate, keeping the box from falling off. I couldn't help but think that a man his age in the states would be happily enjoying retirement, instead he strives everyday to put food on the table and trying to earn a living.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE HOW HAPPY THESE PEOPLE ARE!

I met this woman while we were visiting Wood Town. As soon as we got off the bus she gave all of us hugs. We taught her how to do the 'peace' sign and the entire time she would not stop hugging us and laughing with us. She made me so happy!

On our way home from shift we where stopped at a stop light. I was just sitting in our van looking out the window when I notice a guy pick up a paper coke cup, the ones you get at like McDonald's and such. Well he picked it up, shook it, opened the top, and then took a ship. I couldn't believe my eyes. Initially I was so grossed out, I could not believe what I was seeing. Why would anyone in their right mind ever drink from a cup off the ground? And then it hit me, I was witnessing life, this was this mans way of LIFE. My eyes were open that day. It made me really count my blessings and see that I have so much and I should give to others.

When going out on the town I have been approached plenty of times by children asking for money. We have been advised by the OSSO organization to not give them money because it teaches them to beg, but I feel so bad. As I walked by I noticed their mother digging through the trash. There are city folk that live in Quito and then there are those that live in the mountain area. During the evening they come and sell candies on the street and then as night time falls I noticed some digging through trash to see if the local businesses had thrown away anything valuable and capable of eating. Our own Maid was seen digging through our trash. Some of the girls decided to clean out the fridge and threw away stuff that "wouldn't" be eaten. Later that day the same girl saw our maid taking that "food that no one would eat" out of the trash. She looked up aware someone was looking at her and all she could manage to say was, "its for my family." We take for granted so many little things. Food, considered trash to us, helped feed a family that night. Being in Ecuador has defiantly made me see things in a different light. I am so grateful for the things that I have been given. I have never wanted for food. I have never had to worry about where my next meal is coming from and here its a daily worry and struggle for many. My heart goes out to them. I want to make a difference in life. I want to share their stories. Seeing how someone lives can help you understand who they are. I have appreciated the insight that being here in Ecuador has given me.

Wages: The average wage here is $130-$170 a month. A MONTH people. I feel so stupid to complain about my job and my pay checks when I spend about $100 or more on just clothes each month, not to mention going to movies and going out to eat with my friends, which are plan frivolities. I honestly have nothing to complain about. Its so hard for people to save their money here. Our maid earns $170 a month. She spends $100 on rent and then $40 on other expenses like water and gas (the water has to be delivered here, due to the fact that it is impure). This only leaves her with $30 for the rest of the month to spend on food and her children. What could $30 buy you? think about that..... count your blessing
Housing: The house that I am living in is in a really nice area. It is nice don't get me wrong, our house is big, but it is no 5 star hotel. Most people are shoved into apartment buildings that vary in size and color. The apartments are staked on the side of hills and the Andes mountains, tossed between the forest. People here do not own dryers, so daily, colored clothing spot the roof tops waiting for the sun to dry them. If it rains, then the clothes get a natural second washing and then have to wait till it stops to dry. This place is extremely beautiful. The colorful crowded walls of apartments adds to the atmosphere that makes up Quito. It is unlike anything I have ever seen

Ecuador take 1

okay everyone, by popular demand I have a blog, yes a blog. The purpose of this blog is to fill you all in on my adventures, mishaps, and interesting experiences that happen to me during the next three months. Thanks to Trevor this blog is possible and I hope to keep it updated to fill y'all in on EVERYTHING!!! So look, read, and respond!!!

okay well lets get started on this thing.

April 17th

I got to Airport at 4: 30 in the morning and finally took off to Houston at 6:45. It was such a long day. after we got to Houston we had a 5 HOUR layover. Lets just say that I got to know the Houston Airport a little too well. The girls that I meet and that are staying with me the three months seem really nice. I hope we will all get along really well. So when it was finally time to board our plane you can imagine my excitement. Our plane ride to Quito was about 4 hours. Flying over Quito was so pretty. The lights from the city were so cool. It was at this point that it hit me, I'm in ECUADOR. We got our bags and got into a taxi and drove to the OSSO house. I was so tired by this time that my bed was all that I really wanted. I know, a real eventful day.

April 18th

Today was great. We got to sleep in and then had the older girls cook us breakfast. The view from my window is crazy. The mountains are so pretty. They are so green and lush, it makes me want to go hiking. All we really did today was get a tour of our three story house and go over orientation things. Nothing to great. I learned today how to make and fold cloth diapers and I have a morning shift tomorrow at 6:30. I get to go to the baby orphanage. I am really excited. Oh we had one of the babies come to the house today. She is so cute. her name is Ashley. She is visiting the house because today is her 2nd birthday. I got play with her this afternoon and she is so cute. It makes me really excited for tomorrow. We got a tour of the city tonight as well. Angel the OSSO director drives crazy, well so does everyone else. There seems to be no order to there traffic system, and if there is I am not aware of it at all. The pedestrians don't have the right of way here and so there are blue hearts that have been painted on the road where people have been hit and have died. I'll be sure to take a picture. Angel drives really fast. It was fun but scary at the same time. I was sure that we were going to get in an accident about 5 times. This place is really cool. There is tons of cool buildings and painted walls and such. I stand out so much here. People are so short, its funny. They all keep commenting on the fact that I am "mas alta" As we were walking back to our house tonight we had so guys in their cars yell, "guapas chicas" Its really funny the amount of attention that we get from the guys. Last night at the airport we got stared at so much. Its weird, freaky and funny.

Well till next time
peace love
